A brief history In 1996, Mickey O'Connell and Nancy Engeman were introduced by a mutual friend who knew they shared a common dream ~ that of helping other women in recovery. Mickey dreamed of having an upscale bed and breakfast for recovering women, while Nancy wanted a retreat house for people in recovery. Together they realized there was a great need for safe, supportive housing with a family atmosphere for women recovering from drug and alcohol addiction, and Come Rest Awhile was born. In the spring of 1997, an evening of melodrama and a spaghetti dinner provided seed money that paid for two computers and Oregon non-profit status. A board of three women and an advisory group of six men and women was formed to help, and the journey began. During this time, Nancy and Mickey began to search for suitable housing for the project. Meanwhile, a brochure and flyer were developed and sent to everyone and anyone who might be interested in the project. People in the recovery community heard about CRA and referred people that might be able to help. Progress was slow, due to time restraints and a small budget. Opportunities came and went, but Mickey and Nancy persevered, following all leads, filling out rental applications and keeping the Advisory Group apprised of all progress. Then, through one of the Advisors, a small house in Lake Grove became available. The doors opened on July 1, 2001. Friends of Come Rest Awhile were generous with their donations of money, time, furnishings, linens, kitchen goods and appliances. Nancy moved in as Director and six residents soon followed. As the news of a new home for recovering women went out to the treatment community, more referrals came in and it was shortly realized that there was a need for a larger home. CRA is now located in a large, beautiful home in Lake Oswego and houses 12 women. Since opening, over 150 women have come through the doors, approximately 45% of whom are clean and sober and continue to be a part of the Come Rest Awhile family. Come Rest Awhile hopes to
offer housing to
many more women for many years to come. Thanks to our many friends and
supporters, the mission of Come Rest Awhile is being fulfilled.
